Mural magic – our morning in Mackay

We enjoyed a cheerful, colourful morning out in the heart of Mackay recently, sparking some nostalgic reflections about the city’s evolution over time.

First stop was The Coffee Club where residents found themselves reminiscing about the Mackay of their youth. The location sparked the conversation – the café stands where the Oriental Hotel and Batros Store operated before fire destroyed both buildings. Batros played a central role in helping families set up their homes, selling everything from Manchester and haberdashery to menswear.

After coffee, the group strolled through the Mackay Laneway Project’s circuit of murals and art installations. Pausing to admire the stunning artwork and, of course take fun snaps, the conversation about the changes to the city continued.

As one resident put it, “It’s lovely to see how the city has grown, but even better to share the memories of how it once was.”

Manager, Bien, says Nanyima has been an integral part of the region for over three decades, with most residents hailing from the area. “Our team prides itself on planning outings that help residents maintain connection to the people and places they love,” she says.
